Every March, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month offers an opportunity to reflect, recognize, and celebrate the individuals who have always been, and will always be, an essential part of our communities. This year’s national theme, “We’re Here: Then, Now, Always,” is more than a slogan; it is a powerful reminder of presence, resilience, and the lasting impact of people with developmental disabilities.
For generations, individuals with developmental disabilities have contributed to the fabric of our society in meaningful, lasting ways. Their voices, perspectives, and experiences have helped shape stronger, more compassionate communities. Yet, for far too long, those contributions have been overlooked or undervalued. Today, we are not only recognizing their presence, we are elevating it.
People with developmental disabilities are leaders, advocates, coworkers, neighbors, and friends. They bring unique insights that challenge us to think differently, act more intentionally, and create spaces that are truly inclusive. Their contributions go beyond participation — they actively help redefine what inclusion looks like, pushing communities to grow in understanding, accessibility, and acceptance.
At MARC, Inc., this message is at the heart of our work and why Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is so meaningful to us. Every day, we have the privilege of supporting individuals as they build independence, pursue their goals, and contribute to their communities — showing us the true impact of inclusion in action. This month, we celebrate their achievements, amplify their voices, and reaffirm our commitment to creating opportunities, fostering belonging, and ensuring that every story is seen and heard, not just in March, but year-round.
As the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) so powerfully states, “The national campaign recognizes a simple truth: people with developmental disabilities have always been part of our communities — and always will be.” This truth reflects what we witness at MARC, Inc. each and every day.
At its core, this month is about visibility, respect, and belonging. It is about acknowledging the past, celebrating the present, and committing to a future where every individual is valued for who they are and what they contribute.
Because people with developmental disabilities are not just part of our communities, they are essential to them.
They were here then.
They are here now.
And they will always be here.
